Stortorvets Basarer were built in the period 1840 – 1859, and is now protected. The architect was Chr. Grosch in cooperation with A. de Chateauneuf who later senere restored the cathedral (Domkirken). The church was inaugurated in 1697.

Before:
The basars were built to achive a more organized form of market trade. At the basars one could buy fruit, vegetables, flowers, and meat. The old fleshhooks still exist in the arcade. At the end of the arcade between the church and Karl Johansgate Oslo's first fire station was situated. The tower of the church was used by the firewatcher.

Now:
Since the sixities craftsman designers have established in many of the old basars behind Oslo cathedral. Stortorvet Basarer has become a center for arts, crafts, and design. In the recent years many restaurants have established, making the area popular to the general public.
